Al Sadd were held 1-1 by a fighting Al Sailiya in Week 8 of the QNB Stars League on Sunday.

Tournament top scorer Baghdad Bounedjah netted Al Sadd’s goal in the 66th minute of the fast-paced game, where Al Sailiya put up a stiff resistance against their fancied opponents.

Al Sailiya drew parity when Abdulqadir Ilyas converted from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.

Al Sadd thus lost the leaders’ position to Al Duhail, who have 19 points, two more than The Wolves.

Al Duhail beat Umm Salal 2-0 in the day’s earlier kick-off.

Al Sailiya moved to 16 points.

Bounedjah’s personal tally now stands at 15 goals. Akram Afif, also of Al Sadd, is second on eight.

Both teams had their share of chances. Al Sailiya’s Moroccan ace Rashid Tiberkanine and striker Abdulqadir Ilyas came close to scoring at least on a couple of occasions in the first half.

Al Sadd’s best opportunity to score saw Al Sailiya goalkeeper Saoud Al Khater thwart Akram after he brilliantly played a one-two with Ali Asad.

As the stalemate continued, Al Sadd made a pair of substitutions (Ahmed Sayyar replacing Ali Asad and Tarik Salman coming in for  Hamed Ismail) and Bounedjah’s goal came soon afterwards.

The Algerian spearhead caught hold of a loose ball and cut in through the left before dodging past two defenders and beating Saoud.

Al Sailiya earned the penalty when Al Sadd defender Yasir Abubackar fouled Ilyas and the latter coolly converted from the spot.
