Liverpool have announced the signing of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, nearly one year after the Premier League club triggered his purchase by meeting the release clause in his contract.

Keita, 23, was photographed arriving in Liverpool last week and will join the club for the start of preseason training next month.

Liverpool had originally hoped to accelerate the midfielder's transfer to the January window, but RB Leipzig, who were reluctant to lose him at any point, did not permit him to leave.

"When you see how they performed last season it makes me want to do the same and to be a part of this team," Keita said. "I would like to be able to achieve a similar kind of season with them next season -- but even better.

"I chose Liverpool because it is a team I watched often -- and I also spoke a lot about it with Sadio [Mane]. He told me a lot about the team and the club.

"I also spoke with the coach, who told me about the project for the team and that motivated me to be here."

A Guinea international, Keita joined RB Leipzig in 2016 from Red Bull Salzburg.
