Most of Tottenham's World Cup stars featured from the start and overcame fatigue and a inspired Newcastle team to get three points away from home. Ian Darke joins the FC panel to talk Tottenham after Mauricio Pochettino ends the transfer window without making any new signings.
Tottenham were confirmed as the winners of this summer's International Champions Cup on Saturday, hours after also kicking off their Premier League season with a win.
Spurs' status as ICC champions was confirmed when Inter Milan failed to beat Atletico Madrid by a wide enough margin in the final game of the friendly competition on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino's men beat Roma 4-1, fell to Barcelona on penalties after a 2-2 draw, and edged AC Milan 1-0 in their tour of the U.S. in July to top the table with seven points, just ahead of Borussia Dortmund and Inter on goal difference.
The ICC featured 16 of Europe's top clubs -- including England's top six and Spain's big three -- each playing three games against each other as they prepared for their seasons, though most of the players who took part in the World Cup did not participate.
Though the ICC only represents a minor accomplishment, it's still Spurs' first piece of silverware since claiming the Barclays Asia Trophy in 2009. The club's last proper trophy was the League Cup in 2008, and before that the 1991 FA Cup.
Still, Spurs will be more pleased to have opened the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.
