Jugurtha Hamroun is on a mission to help Al Kharatiyat make a turnaround in their fortunes in the QNB Stars League.

The attacking midfielder started playing for Al Kharatiyat from the fourth round of this season’s league competition after his switch from Al Sadd on loan.

Being a professional, the Algerian settled into his stride sooner and Al Kharatiyat pulled off a coup by beating formidable Al Gharafa by two goals without reply in Week 7. That victory came as a great relief for The Thunders who had not collected a point until then.

In an exclusive interview with QSL Online, Hamroun spoke about a wide range of topics. Excerpts:

How did you find yourself at your new team Al Kharatiyat?

It’s never easy to change team especially since I came from a side that competes for all titles! I had to get used to the new set-up. Everything was new — the environment, team-mates, coach…

How did you get adapted to the new set-up?

I’m 29 years of age. I’m a professional and have played under many coaches. Good results were not coming and it was a new challenge, but I took it up.

What do you think is needed for Al Kharatiyat to go forward in the league?

The win over Al Gharafa was a good breakthrough. A victory makes much of a difference. It came after six defeats and a change at the technical level (Moroccan Abdelaziz El Amri replaced Tunisian coach Nassif Al Bayawi after three matches).

You win one or two games and you move up the standings. It had made all of us happy even though we lost to Qatar SC in Week 8.

How motivated are you representing Al Kharatiyat?

I always believe Al Kharatiyat have quality. We have to believe in ourselves. The spirit in the team camp is laudable.

How do you feel playing under El Amri?

His philosophy is different. We see many good things in him. The team started scoring goals. He listens to the players and we feel free to ask him any doubt.

It’s true that he has had a tough task on hand. He’s trying to put things in place despite being under pressure.

What’s the team’s target in this season’s QNB Stars League?

We’re realistic. Our target for the season is to stay in the first division. In the short term, we want to continue the good work, collect points and gradually move away from the danger zone.

How do you see it from a personal point of view?

Personally, I give my 100 per cent to whichever team I play for. Al Kharatiyat are no different. I’m excited to be playing for them. I want to improve myself and enjoy my game as well.

How supportive is the team management?

The management is indeed very supportive. The club board members are trying their best to help the team do well.

What’s your message to the club’s fans?

We do have passionate fans. They have to continue to be patient for good results. I hope they’ll soon start enjoying our game.

How do you rate your time with Al Sadd?

It goes without saying that Al Sadd are one of the top sides in Asia. Personally, I had a good time with them, winning three titles and scoring many goals, let alone the umpteen number of assists given. The team also did well in the AFC Champions League.
