Manchester United defender Luke Shaw is set to be recalled to the England squad for next month's games against Spain and Switzerland, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC, with Old Trafford teammate Ashley Young missing out.

Young, who played a key role as England reached the World Cup semifinals, will miss out, according to reports, allowing manager Gareth Southagte to look at younger players.

Liverpool's Joe Gomez, meanwhile, is set to return after missing the World Cup due to an ankle injury, while Manchester City's Phil Foden and Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho could earn their first call-ups.

Young, 33, understands Southgate's decision to look at younger players but has no intention of retiring from international football just yet.

His absence has opened the door for Shaw following his impressive start to the season for United.

Southgate was in attendance as Tottenham Hotspur won 3-0 at Old Trafford on Monday and sources have told ESPN FC that he had spoken to Shaw.

The 23-year-old defender won the last of his seven caps against Germany last March.
